Whenever I see “UMAIBO”, I remember my childhood. “UMAIBO” is in good memories of my childhood. I brought it with me when it comes field trips from grade 1 to grade 12. I guess all Japanese has good memories with their childhood’s Dagashi. “UMAIBO” is one of our favorite Dagashi for long.

“DAGASI” history started since Edo period. It was made of cheap ingredients like grains or starch. On the other hand, there was sweet it was called “JOGASHI”, it was so expensive and used for tea ceremony. So We can tell that “DAGASHI” was opposite sweet of “JOGASHI”.
Most of sweets sold as “DAGASHI” currently have been developed after the war, due to the flow from Meiji era. Their wrapping design was usually popular baseball players or animation characters to get kid’s attentions. Sometimes there were “DAGASHI” with bonus (you might win another one).
After the war, 1st baby boom(1947-1949) came and the increase of the population of newborn baby and the situation of economy helped “DAGASHI-YA” be appeared all over the streets nationwide. However nowadays, they are less due to changes in social conditions. Instead of “DAGASHI-YA”, you can see “DAGASHI” at convenience stores, supermarkets or sometimes you can see “DAGASHI-YA” in big shopping mall as one of their tenant.
If we are talking about traditional DAGASHI, “UMAIBO” might not be a traditional one, Kurobou or Konpeito has longer history. However “UMAI-BO” must be one of the long run people’s favorite “DAGASHI” since 1979.
“UMAIBO” is bar type snack made of corn. It is sold by Yaokin Inc and manufactured by Risca.,Co.Ltd. Since 1979, they are selling several tastes of “UMAIBO”. The company is making efforts to search the new ones match the times and also they never loose the original route of ” DAGASHI” that makes kids enjoy and happy until now.

Why there is hole in the bar?
The hole makes the texture better and crispy, and also it makes ”UMAIBO” strong to protect cracking. There is an exception for “Sugar Rusk” flavor to reproduce of the texture.
Which one takes longer time to make?
“Takoyaki” taste. They put sauce and bake, then repeat it again. Putting sauce twice and baking twice, so it takes longer than other ones. That’s why the taste is rich and delicious but still same price with others.
There are different packages in same flavor?
Yes, there is ! They want to deliver kids ” Oishii=delicious” and ” Tanoshii=Joy” by eating “UMAIBO”.
Why is it sold for 10 yen?
They wanted to make something for kids to afford. If they have 100 yen, they can buy 10 of them, that must make kids happy. So they are particular about the price of 10 yen. That’s why they haven’t increased the price for 41 years from the beginning.
How did you pick the name ” UMAIBO”?
That’s pretty simple! the reason is it is yummy-bar(UMAI-BO)!

TONKATSU SAUCE TASTE
Another long run taste since July 1979. I believe Tonkatsu sauce match to anything, that’s why people love it.
Since 1980 Regular taste of UMAIBO. I’m sure this taste will be high popularity rank.
This is the most salable taste of UMAIBO since 1982! I am still eating this, Even I am not a kid anymore though!
The most time consuming taste ” Takoyaki” since 1987. ! Remember? twice sauce, twice bake….no doubt that this is yummy.
CORN POTAGE TASTE
This is exactly corn potage taste….can’t stop eating it….Since 1992.
Can you imagine someone will make snack taste ” NATTO”??? This taste has been reproduced several times since first one appeared in 1993.
Since 2013. Only this taste no hole in the bar. You can check the difference of texture.
It is said that there are around 60 tastes they made. some of them became a regular taste, but some of them put out of production line. I am pretty sure that you can find your favorite taste from their products. Dagashi is not only for kids, but also for adults.
There are so many great things about Umaibo that I can’t tell you all here but if I add to the end, they never increased the price of Umaibo for 41 years. If the ingredients became expensive, they reduced the size of bar, not increasing the price. They care about the clients, especially about kids. And they have been searching new tastes for 41 years and produce it. They never stop to make kids surprise. From their idea, new products are coming out like “UMAIWA” or “PREMIUM UMAIBO”. We will wait for what taste will come out as a new product!
